Deeside Sixth student Sam Hawley was recently selected to receive a special gift from Her Majesty The Queen.

The Queen recently visited the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh at their home in Lucknow Barracks, Tidworth in Wiltshire.  As part of the regimental family, Sam, 17 from Connah’s Quay and around 10 others went down to attend the event.

As the company Sergeant Major, Sam was selected to receive a piece of leek which was wrapped in red thread and dipped in real gold paint from the Queen to pin on his beret, which is a St David’s Day tradition.

During the event the annual Target Rifle Shoot was held, with Sam becoming runner up best shot in Wales in the shooting competition.

“It was a great day” added Sam “and an honour to receive the pin from the Queen on behalf of the battalion.”

Head of Deeside Sixth Form Centre, Alex Thomas said:

“We are very proud of Sam’s hard work and he is very privileged to have received the prestigious accolade from Her Majesty.”
