More than 1,100 food premises across Wales have a zero or one rating for food hygiene, according to information obtained by PlaidCymru.

More than 100 of these were in North Wales, where 12 premises had a zero rating. Conwy had 6 zero-rated premises and 31 rated at one – on a scale of zero to five. By contrast, Anglesey had no zero ratings and 11 one ratings.

31% of Deeside takeaways scored 2 or less in their respective food hygiene inspections.

In Flintshire there are 891 food premises, 2 scored a zero rating and 19 achieved just a score of 1.

A Plaid Cymru supporter submitted a Freedom of Information request and information on ratings was also obtained from the Food Standards Agency website http://ratings.food.gov.uk

Plaid Cymru’s Shadow Minister for Food Llyr Gruffydd said:

“The system of publishing food hygiene ratings on the Food Standards Agency website and at food establishments gives the consumer the information they need to decide which premises they will use.

“It is vital that local authorities ensure that all premises display their ratings so they are seen by the public and they certainly provide an encouragement to businesses to up their game.

“The vast majority of food premises have shown themselves to be excellent when it comes to ensuring good food hygiene standards but there are still too many that are not up to scratch.

“Where there are significant failings, local authorities need to send out a message to businesses that they face prosecution if their actions put the health of consumers at risk.”
