US aerospace firm Triumph to create 60 new jobs in £5m Deeside expansion
Triumph the Pennsylvania based aerospace company which makes components for Airbus is creating 60 new jobs in Deeside with a £5m to expansion project.
The First Minister Carwyn Jones met with the senior representatives from the Triumph Group at their headquarters in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, to announce the expansion of their specialist UK aerospace centre at the Deeside Enterprise Zone in North Wales.
As a result of their acquisition of the GE Actuation business in 2014, Triumph, a global leader in aerospace systems secured a multi-million annual contract to supply Airbus with actuation components for aircraft landing gear.
The new facility, secured with Welsh Government support, will see work move from China to North Wales, and will create over 60 new, highly skilled jobs at the company’s plant in Deeside, doubling the workforce in North Wales, UK to more than 100.
The First Minister described the investment as great news for Triumph’s Deeside facility and a major boost for the aerospace industry in Wales – a priority economic sector.
As a result, Deeside will become supplier of hydraulic actuation systems used in the landing gear for Airbus A380 and A320 aircraft. The approximate £5m investment in new facilities and equipment is backed by £392,000 business finance from the Welsh Government.
Speaking from Triumph Group, Inc’s headquarters in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, the First Minister said:
“Triumph Group is an acknowledged global leader in its field and I am pleased to say that this expansion in the UK was made in Wales.
“This latest investment in Triumph’s Deeside facility will not only create a new specialist aerospace centre of excellence in Wales but will effectively secure the sustainable long term future of the site and open up a range of new business opportunities with future expansion potential.
“It also reinforces and strengthens the historic links between North Wales and this Welsh part of Pennsylvania which date back to the 17th century when Welsh settlers first moved here. Berwyn of course was named after the beautiful Berwyn Mountain range in North East Wales – not far from Deeside.”
Jeffry D. Frisby, Triumph’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said:
“We are pleased to be expanding our facility in Deeside and welcome the support we are receiving from the Welsh Government. We view Deeside as an excellent business location with a high skills base and a thriving aerospace cluster and are excited by this new business opportunity.”
Work on the 2300 sq mt extension to accommodate the new business is due to get underway in April with production commencing in January 2016.
The Deeside facility is an established centre for the design and manufacture of electric actuation, a relatively new technology favoured by air forces and unmanned systems manufacturers because of the significant weight savings. Bespoke electronic printed circuit boards are also designed on site for original equipment manufacturers.
News of the jobs being created in Deeside has been welcomed by Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant.
Carl said:
“This will see the number of staff at the Deeside site increased to about 100, which is excellent news.
“It’s another indication that we are leading the way in industry here in North Wales and proof that the presence of huge firms like Airbus are continuing to attract new investment and further bolster our economy, which in turn is helping to create and secure jobs for local people long-term.
“I look forward to seeing work begin on the new Triumph site in January next year.”
