Wrexham Police FC will take on a team of Wrexham Legends this weekend in aid a local charity that has captured the hearts of all involved.

The match, which kicks off at 2pm on Sunday 6 October at Airbus’s Airfield Stadium, will help raise vital funds for Boxes of Sunshine.

The charity was started by parents Kev and Lynsey Hill in September 2022 as a way to honour their daughter Kirsten, who passed away in late 2021 following a short and sudden battle with Leukemia.

In the two years preceding Kirsten’s sudden death, she suffered with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A condition which causes extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain and brain fog.

It was back in February when Sergeant Dave Smith first came across the Boxes of Sunshine charity, when they were the designated matchday charity at Wrexham’s home game against Notts County.

He approached some of the volunteer bucket collectors, and learned how Boxes of Sunshine aims to bring joy to young people across the UK living with chronic illnesses or long-term health conditions.

The sunshine is provided in the form of a postal gift box, which contains 11 items, which have been specially chosen to give to bring joy or comfort.

In their first year alone the charity sent out over 200 boxes.

The game on Sunday will see Wrexham Police FC – a team made up of off-duty officers – take on the Wrexham Legends.

So far the Wrexham Legends are keeping their starting 11 close to their chests, but one true legends of the Wrexham Club has been announced – Super Steve Watkin – scorer of the winning goal in the 1992 third round FA Cup tie against the mighty Arsenal.

To see Steve and the other legends battle it out against the best that Wrexham Police have to offer, head down to the Airfield Stadium, Broughton CH4 0DR from 1pm (for 2pm kick off).

Entry is via a discretionary donation on the gate, and there will be charity volunteers on hand to to tell you a bit more about Boxes of Sunshine or to accept additional donations.

Wrexham Police FC have also set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for Boxes of Sunshine. You can donate and support the charity here.  More information about Boxes of Sunshine and the work they do can be found on the website.
