“What a legend” – Joe Wicks meets Buckley’s John Morris, 82, at Manchester parkrun

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

An 82-year-old runner from Buckley was approached at the finish by fitness coach Joe Wicks for an on-camera interview after the pair crossed paths at one of Manchester’s toughest parkrun courses.

John Morris, a member of Buckley Runners and a regular at Wepre Park parkrun in Connah’s Quay, took part in the Philips Park parkrun in Manchester on Saturday 20 June.

Wicks, the fitness coach and author known as The Body Coach, was also running the event.

Wicks stopped to interview John on camera, describing him as “such an inspiration.”

Joe Wicks said:

“I’m here with John, who, for me, is such an inspiration. 82 years old and you have run 260 parkruns, amazing. That’s not an easy route, that’s a very tough course.”

John, who was accompanied by his carer, told Wicks what keeps him going.

“Its getting out isnt it,” he said.

Asked how he feels at the end of a parkrun, John said: “Fine, me, they all say I don’t sweat.”

Wicks replied: “Honestly, that’s a steep bit of hill as well. If I’m 82 still running 5k runs, I’d be very happy with myself.”

John also told Wicks the club runs mountains during the week.

“We normally do mountains midweek,” he said.

Wicks later posted about the encounter on social media.

“This is what I love about parkrun,” he wrote. “I always meet so many incredible and inspiring people. John is 82 and still smashing it. What a legend.”

Wepre Park parkrun, which is based at Wepre Park in Connah’s Quay, paid tribute to John on social media after the encounter.

“You have just got to love John Morris, Buckley runner and regular at Wepre parkrun,” the group posted on Facebook.

“Lovely to see you impressing the crowds at Philips Park parkrun along with Joe Wicks.”

Philips Park parkrun is a free, community event held every Saturday morning in Philips Park, Manchester, where participants can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate.

The course has a reputation as one of the most challenging parkrun routes in the city.

Wepre Park parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at Wepre Park in Connah’s Quay and is free to attend.
