Things to do in Mold

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Theatr Clwyd

The theatre sits on the hillside above town, about a mile from the centre on the B5444.

Wales’s largest producing theatre, it makes its own shows and has sent productions to the West End and the National Theatre.

The building completed a major redevelopment in 2025 and now has a new three-storey foyer with a café at ground level and a restaurant above.

You do not need a ticket to use the café.

The season covers original drama, musicals, comedy, family shows, and an annual pantomime.

The market

Wednesday and Saturday, High Street and Daniel Owen Square.

Among the largest outdoor street markets in north Wales, with food, clothing, plants, hardware, and general goods spread along the full length of the town centre.

Get there early on Saturday – stalls are fullest before ten and some traders start packing down by early afternoon.

The Welsh cake stalls are reliable.

There is also an indoor market open Monday to Saturday in a permanent covered space off the High Street.

Bailey Hill

The earthwork mound at the top of town is the remains of a Norman castle built around 1072.

It is a scheduled ancient monument and free to visit.

The mound itself is what survives – the wooden keep that once stood on it is long gone, and the surrounding parkland was laid out in the nineteenth century.

There is a war memorial garden at the base.

The views from the top of the mound across Mold and towards the Clwydian hills are worth the short climb.

The access point is off King Street, next to the war memorial.

The Clwydian Range and Moel Famau

The Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty starts effectively on Mold’s doorstep.

Moel Famau is the highest point in the range at 554 metres and the most popular walk, approached from the Bwlch Penbarras car park on the B5429 — about four miles from Mold town centre.

The Jubilee Tower at the summit is a ruined stone tower built in 1810 for the golden jubilee of George III.

The round trip from the car park is about four miles.

The paths are well-maintained but the ridge is exposed and weather on the top can change quickly, in any season.

Bring layers, waterproofs, and proper footwear regardless of how it looks in town.

The Offa’s Dyke Path long-distance trail crosses the range, so the Bwlch Penbarras car park is a useful starting point for longer walks north or south along the ridge.

Loggerheads Country Park

Four miles west of Mold on the A494, Loggerheads is a Denbighshire County Council-managed country park in the Alyn Valley.

There is a café, toilets, and a visitor centre.

Riverside walks through the limestone gorge – the stretch known as the Devil’s Gorge — are the main draw.

Dogs are welcome on leads.

The car park charges apply; check current rates before going.

Loggerheads is worth pairing with a walk on the Clwydian Range for a full day out, or as a standalone half-day.

Mold Leisure Centre

The council-run leisure centre on Tyddyn Street has a swimming pool, gym, sports hall, and fitness classes.

It is a straightforward family option if the weather turns.

Check Flintshire Leisure’s website for current opening hours and swim times, as these change seasonally.

Beyond the town

Mold is well placed for a wider day.

Wrexham is about twelve miles south and is accessible by bus.

Chester is eight miles east – the A494 is the direct route.

The north Wales coast is about thirty minutes north on the A55 via Northop and Holywell.

Llandudno is under an hour.

If you are visiting Mold as a base, the combination of Theatr Clwyd in the evening, the market in the morning, and a walk on the Clwydian Range in the afternoon is a full day without driving far.
