Hundreds of fish stocked at Greenfield Valley’s Meadow Mill Pool

Greenfield Valley Trust has announced improvements to Meadow Mill Fishing Pool, following a public meeting with local anglers.
A £1,500 grant from the Kingspan Community Grants Scheme will fund the cutting of aquatic weed in the pool ahead of the school summer holidays.
More than 600 small to medium-sized fish were transferred from Parys Mine Pool to Meadow Mill Pool during the first week of June.
The fish were chosen to provide better opportunities for younger anglers, and complement larger fish stocked in the pool during 2025.
Doug Don, Greenfield Valley Ranger for Flintshire County Council, said the long-term plan includes seven additional fishing pegs and a path around the entire pool.
He said the immediate priority is improving fishing around the existing pegs, starting with weed clearance.
Doug Don said: “It is still early days for Meadow Mill Pool, and it will take time for it to develop into the quality fishing venue we are aiming to create. Our long-term vision includes seven additional fishing pegs and a path around the entire pool, but our immediate priority is to improve the fishing around the existing pegs. Tackling the weed growth is the first step, and we are extremely grateful to Kingspan for providing the funding that will allow this work to take place before the summer holidays.”
Chemical weed treatments, including dyes and herbicides, cannot be used at the pool.
This is because Holywell Stream flows continuously through Meadow Mill Pool before passing into downstream pools and eventually the River Dee.
Almost 40 free fishing permits have been issued this year.
Permits are available free of charge from Greenfield Valley, although anglers aged 13 and over must hold a valid Environment Agency rod licence.
Brenda Harvey, Associate Member of Greenfield Valley Trust, said: “We are delighted that our funding applications have been successful and have enabled us to make such positive progress in creating an accessible fishing lake close to the Visitor Centre and car park. The Trust remains committed to securing further funding to continue improving the facility, and we would like to thank Kingspan for their generous community grant, which will allow the weed clearance work to take place very soon.”
She said the Trust would like to see a Community Fishing Group formed.
Harvey said: “As we look ahead to the next stage of the project, we would love to see members of the local community come together to form an official Community Fishing Group. Such a group would strengthen communication, encourage more volunteering and open up additional funding opportunities that are not currently available to the Trust or the Council. Anyone interested in joining one of our future Fishing Volunteer Days, will see further details on our website and social media channels.”
Meadow Mill Fishing Pool is within Greenfield Valley Heritage Park, between Greenfield and Holywell.
Full details of fishing permits are available on the Greenfield Valley website or at the Visitor Centre.
