Public consultation launched on new North Wales fire training centre

North Wales Fire and Rescue Authority has launched a public consultation on a new training centre for firefighters, called Hwb Awen.
The centre is proposed for the former Pilkington’s glass factory site on St Asaph Business Park.
The consultation opened on 29 June and runs until midnight on 31 August.
The service says the site would be accessible to 89% of North Wales fire stations within 60 minutes, including those across Flintshire.
Plans include training facilities, specialist operational areas, accommodation, operational stores and a new headquarters.
Justin Evans, Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Strategic Lead for the project, said, “This is about much more than a new building. It’s about creating a safe, modern and resilient base that supports our firefighters, strengthens leadership, and ensures we can continue to protect the people of North Wales in an increasingly complex risk environment.”
The service says the centre would increase firefighter training capacity by 60%.
It has also set targets of 580 weeks of placements and 2,500 training hours, along with a target for 60% of the workforce to be Welsh.
Members of the public can view the proposals and ask questions at St Asaph Fire Station on 28 July, between 2pm and 6pm, and on 4 August, between 5pm and 7pm.
The consultation will also be at the Denbigh and Flint County Show on 20 August, along with the Anglesey County Show on 11 and 12 August and the Merioneth County Show on 26 August.
A separate event for residents and businesses closest to the site has already taken place.
