Strong winds to disrupt Flintshire this weekend, Met Office warns

Flintshire residents are being urged to prepare for a weekend of strong winds, as the Met Office issues yellow weather warnings for both Saturday and Sunday.
Gusts of 50–60 mph are expected across the region, with coastal and high-ground areas potentially seeing winds reach 70 mph.
The warnings, active from 7.00am to 11.59pm on Saturday and throughout Sunday, are part of a broader alert covering much of Wales and northern England.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “This has the potential to cause delays to public transport and some disruption to the road network, which may have a greater-than-usual impact given the busier pre-Christmas weekend travel.”
Impact on Travel and Coastal Areas
Residents are being warned of widespread disruption to road, rail, air, and ferry transport.
High-sided vehicles are at particular risk on exposed routes and bridges, while bus and train services may face delays and cancellations.
Coastal routes and communities are expected to bear the brunt of the storm. Large waves and spray could make seafront areas hazardous, with the potential for short-term power outages adding to the disruption.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks emphasised the timing of the warnings: “This period of disruptive weather coincides with a busy period on UK roads as the festive getaway starts for many. The strongest winds are expected on Saturday afternoon and evening, particularly in northern Scotland, but strong winds will be more widespread on Sunday.”
Staying Safe
The Met Office has advised residents to check travel updates regularly and adjust plans where possible. Those near coastal areas are urged to take precautions, as large waves could pose a risk to safety.
“Large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea,” the Met Office warned. “Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead.”
Festive Forecast
The winds are expected to ease early next week, with a milder and more settled Christmas period predicted.
Christmas Eve will bring occasional rain or drizzle, but Christmas Day itself is likely to be mostly dry and cloudy, with temperatures remaining mild across the UK.
