Six years after a lorry strike damaged Primrose Hill Bridge, long-awaited repairs are set to begin this month, bringing five weeks of overnight closures to the A55 in North Wales.

The bridge, located at St George, Conwy, suffered significant structural damage in 2019, when several of its support beams were bent out of shape.

The Welsh Government has now confirmed that funding has been allocated, allowing the essential repair work to go ahead.

To carry out the heat straightening repairs, the eastbound carriageway between Junction 24 (Abergele) and Junction 25 (Bodelwyddan) will be fully closed overnight from 8pm to 6am, seven nights a week, from 26 January to 2 March 2025.

Further Disruption at Junctions 25 and 26

As part of the works, additional carriageway repairs will also take place at Junctions 25 and 26, requiring a one-night closure of the eastbound exit and entry slip roads on 10 February 2025.

The repairs aim to restore the bridge’s full structural capacity.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and plan ahead as the overnight closures and diversions are expected to impact journey times.

Diversion Routes

During the closures, eastbound traffic will be diverted via:

J24 (Abergele) eastbound off-slip
A547 roundabout
Rejoining the A55 at J27 (St Asaph)
Drivers are urged to allow extra time for their journeys and check for updates before setting off.
