The M53 is closed southbound between Junction 4 (Clatterbridge) and Junction 5 (Birkenhead) due to a collision.

Emergency services at the scene and a diversion has been put in place.

North West Motorway Police believe there to be no injuries, they said in a statement said: “RTC M53 southbound, between junction 4 and 5, HGV overturned also involving a van, full closure of carriageway due to HGV deposited cargo of soya across carriageway, no reports of any injuries.”Police say they are in the process of releasing trapped traffic.

Latest traffic report:

Road closed and queueing traffic due to rolled over truck and spillage of soya and diesel on M53 Southbound from J4 A5137 Brimstage Road (Bebington) to J5 A41 New Chester Road (Eastham). Congestion to J3 (Woodchurch). Also causing congestion on routes throughout Port Sunlight, Heswall and Barnston as traffic looks to avoid the closure. The road was closed at around 14:05. It is currently unknown how long the closure will remain in place for. Detour in operation – leave junction 4 onto the B5151 through Clatterbridge.
