Google has updated Google maps to include public transport information for the whole of the UK

Up until now it had only offered public transport info for London and some areas of south-east England, the latest update now includes the rest of England, Wales and Scotland.

The map now shows realtime departures and arrivals for buses, trains, ferry’s and trams, by 15,000 different operators along 17,000 routes with more than 330,000 pick up points.

The Google map app and desktop version also compares all the available routes via the different transport modes, including walking and driving, to see which is the quickest or easiest.

David Tattersall, product manager for Public Transport in Google Maps said:

‘My own journey with Google Maps started in a pub near Chester four years ago when I wanted to demonstrate the product I’d be working on to a friend: public transport in maps. I searched for directions to the town centre and even though the number 1 bus from Wrexham to Chester ran right past the pub, it wasn’t even listed as an option.’

‘We’ve come a long way since then. You can now get public transport directions for everything from cross-country trips, to timings for the local village bus, to the St Mawes ferry in Cornwall which will save you a 55 minute journey over land to Falmouth. The number 1 bus to Chester town centre is also listed.’

We tried a search for Shotton to Wrexham via the train route, the result now shows the departure and arrival time as well as links to online ticket purchasing.
