Delyn MS Hannah Blythyn has criticised the high electricity standing charges faced by North Wales residents, calling for urgent action to address what she describes as an unfair system.

Speaking in the Senedd, Blythyn highlighted that North Wales has the highest daily standing charge for electricity in England and Wales, at just over 69p per day.

In comparison, Londoners pay just over 46p, while South Wales residents face a charge of just over 51p. Additionally, North Wales also has the highest electricity unit rate, further increasing the financial burden on households.

“It’s not fair, not in the interests of my constituents and needs rectifying,” the Delyn MS said. “Whilst I recognise to change this is outside the powers of this place and Welsh Government, I am sure you will agree with me that this is an unacceptable situation for the people of North Wales.”

The call for change comes as Ofgem confirms a 6.4% increase in the energy price cap from April to June 2025, adding an estimated £111 per year to the average household bill.

She is urging the Welsh Government to support stronger social tariffs to help ease the impact of high energy costs. She also believes energy suppliers should have a social obligation to switch customers to the cheapest available tariff automatically.

For those struggling with energy costs, Hannah’s office is offering help and advice. Constituents can visit her office at 52 High Street, Mold, call 01352 753464, or email [email protected] with details of their case.
