Connah’s Quay High School modernisation reaches significant landmark

The steel beams and framework for Connah’s Quay High School’s £13m revamp have arrived and things are starting to take shape.

A “beam signing” event attended by councillors, officials and representatives of the contractor, Wrexham based Kier Construction took place recently.

“The beam signing event is a significant landmark in the modernisation programme for Connah’s Quay High School” said John O’Callaghan, Northern Managing Director of Kier Construction.

“The steelwork has been provided by local company Evadx Limited and we’re looking forward to working with them as we construct the new two-storey teaching block, which will provide top quality facilities for students when complete.” Mr O’Callaghan added.

The work centres around the replacement of the existing Design and Technology (D&T) block and Art and Food Technology block which will be replaced with a new two storey building comprising administration, D&T, Food Tech, Art and Design and room for additional teaching provision, office space, toilets, lift, stairs and a plant room.

The Leader of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Aaron Shotton, said:

“The Council continues to work to provide a high quality sustainable education for all our learners. It was pleasing to visit Connah’s Quay High School and see the construction of the new building starting to take shape, the developments at the School will transform the learning facilities on offer in Connah’s Quay and I look forward to seeing the work completed by early 2019.”

The work forms part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme and follows the successful completion of Holywell Learning Campus and Deeside 6th Form College and work due to start shortly on the new primary school in Penyffordd.

Education Secretary, Kirsty Williams, said:

“I am pleased that work is progressing on this new state-of-the-art facility which is benefitting from Welsh Government funding.

Our national mission is to raise standards, reduce the attainment gap and deliver an education system that is a source of national pride and confidence.

Our 21st Century Schools and Education Programme plays a key part in this and is the largest investment in our schools and colleges since the 1960s.”
