Residents and shoppers in Connah’s Quay have voted for  Canolfan Enfys to receive a £5,000 donation as part of Tesco’s annual Golden Grants Day.

The funds will go towards enriching the school’s facilities, including a complete renovation of their sensory garden for children with complex needs.

The Mold based school, which supports children aged 3-7 with social and communication difficulties, was chosen by customers at Tesco’s Connah’s Quay Express store on 21st September, when shoppers participated in a lucky dip to find gold versions of Tesco’s iconic blue voting tokens.

Transforming the Sensory Garden

Katie Aston, Administrator at Canolfan Enfys, expressed her excitement: “We will be able to completely re-do our tired sensory garden instead of patching it up. It will be another functioning area of our school for children to explore all of their senses and benefit from being outdoors. We don’t know how to thank Tesco and the public enough for their support, we are so grateful.”

The grant, part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts programme in partnership with Groundwork UK, aims to support schools and children’s groups with projects that promote physical and mental wellbeing, such as providing healthy food or purchasing equipment for outdoor activities.

Supporting Local Communities

Over one hundred Tesco stores across the country took part in the Golden Grants event, with £500,000 in total being donated to local schools and community projects. Tesco’s Head of Communities, Claire De Silva, said: “We know that £5,000 can make a huge difference to a school or community project, so we are incredibly proud to have been able to award Golden Grants to over one hundred schools and local projects. Our Stronger Starts programme continues to support our local communities year-round.”

Since its launch in 2016, Tesco’s Community Grants programme has donated more than £120 million to over 67,000 schools and groups, helping to fund initiatives that make a difference to children’s lives across the UK.

Local schools and children’s groups can apply for Stronger Starts grants ranging from £500 to £1,500 by visiting www.tescoplc.com/strongerstarts.
