Airbus Broughton is marking National Apprenticeship Week by highlighting what it describes as a “full circle” success for its Partnership School STEM Outreach programme.

The North Wales site has recruited two former local students, Rison Bandara Athauda and Muhammad Diallo, into apprenticeships after they first engaged with Airbus through school outreach sessions.

Their journey began when Paul Kilmister, Head of CDT Widebody and Senior Lead STEM Outreach Sponsor for Whitby High School, delivered an assembly on apprenticeship opportunities.

This was followed by activities including apprenticeship “speed dating” and one-to-one mentoring sessions.

Speaking about the programme, Paul Kilmister said: “Our STEM Outreach programmes are not only important to the Broughton plant today, they are also important for future skills for tomorrow. The work starts now and this happens through supporting school curriculums and our early career programmes.”

Muhammad Diallo, now an apprentice at the site, said: “I used to see Airbus as a big company and thought that it would be intimidating. But now that I’m here I see that it is very welcoming and very supportive of their employees.”

Rison Bandara Athauda added: “I chose an apprenticeship pathway as it allowed me to be hands on and build relationships that allow me to better understand Airbus. I’m always meeting people who are helping to develop the company and it is great to be a part of that.”

Airbus works with local schools by supporting lesson plans within the curriculum and offering hands-on experiences at the Broughton site to help students better understand their subjects and career options.

The Airbus Broughton STEM Outreach programme includes apprenticeship assemblies, advice sessions, curriculum support, mock interviews and on-site experiences.

According to Airbus, in 2025 colleagues from Filton and Broughton delivered more than 350 STEM events, visited 200 schools and colleges, and recorded 62,000 interactions with students.
