Two Flintshire housing developments totalling 183 affordable homes have been completed, backed by more than £30 million in Welsh Government Social Housing Grants.

Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government Jayne Bryant MS visited both sites on Wednesday alongside ClwydAlyn’s Head of Development and Growth, Penny Storr.

The first development, Hawthorn Meadow on Well Street in Buckley, comprises 83 homes built at a cost of £20 million.

Eight of the homes are bungalows, two of which have been purpose-built to meet the needs of residents with accessibility requirements.

Homes at Hawthorn Meadow will be allocated through the Sarth Housing Register and Tai Teg.

The second development, Northern Gateway at Garden City in Deeside, comprises 100 homes built on the former Shotton Steelworks and Corus site, supported by an £18 million Social Housing Grant.

Both schemes were developed by ClwydAlyn alongside contractor Castle Green Partnerships, Flintshire County Council and the Welsh Government.

All homes across both sites are heated by air source heat pumps, fitted with solar electricity panels, and built with extensive insulation designed to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.

Bryant MS said: “These two sites in Flintshire show that building the homes people need and building sustainably go hand in hand.

“Families moving in will benefit from lower energy bills and warmer homes, and I am proud that Welsh Government grants have helped make that possible.”

Penny Storr, Head of Development and Growth at ClwydAlyn, said: “Both of these developments are long-standing strategic sites which have been successfully brought to fruition through strong partnerships and determination.

“These well-placed urban schemes have the benefits of easy access to transport, employment and social infrastructure; offering our residents communities not just homes.

“We are extremely grateful for the Social Housing Grants provided by Welsh Government, which have allowed for the creation of these much-needed, affordable family homes for local residents.”

Both developments meet Welsh Government Development Quality Requirements and Welsh Government Housing Quality Standard.
