After nearly four years of ‘planning’ the steel man sculpture known as the ‘Giant of Hawarden Bridge’ has returned to Deeside.

The 12-foot sculpture, known locally as the Steel Man’ represents a steelworker at the former John Summer’s and Son site in Shotton, now Tata Steel.

The sculpture had been relocated to County Hall in Mold since the closure of the County Council’s Offices in Ewloe early 2000.

However, Shotton Town Council have aspired to see the sculpture located closer to its source of inspiration and Flintshire County Council has been working closely with them to achieve this.

The relocation of the sculpture forms part of the Connah’s Quay, Shotton and Queensferry Renewal Area programme.

Funding for the Scheme was received from Shotton Town Council, Flintshire County Council and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The sculpture which reflects Deeside’s heavy industrial past, is located at the junction of Chester Road East and Rowley’s Drive in Shotton.

The area around the steel man has also been improved with the addition of trees, shrubs, lighting and seating.
