Young people in Wales can now travel by bus for £1

Young people across Wales can now travel by bus for as little as £1 under a new pilot scheme introduced today.
The scheme, funded by the Welsh Government and delivered by Transport for Wales, allows 16 to 21-year-olds with a valid mytravelpass to buy £1 single tickets or unlimited day tickets for £3.
The reduced fares are available on most local bus services across Wales and some cross-border routes into England.
To benefit from the new prices, passengers must apply for a free mytravelpass.
The pass must be shown to the driver when boarding or when buying tickets through bus operator apps.
Lee Robinson, Executive Director for Regional Transport and Integration at Transport for Wales, said: “This pilot scheme, is a significant step towards making public transport more affordable for young people in Wales. By reducing fares to just £1, we hope to encourage more young people to choose the bus.”
The scheme is designed to make travel more accessible for young people, with the aim of supporting education, training and employment opportunities, as well as enabling social connections.
A wide range of operators have signed up to the scheme, including Arriva Cymru, First Cymru, Townlynx and many smaller independent bus companies. A full list of over 40 participating operators has been published by Transport for Wales.
The discounted fares can be purchased directly from drivers when boarding or through mobile ticketing apps.
Single tickets bought through an app can only be used on services run by the operator that sold the ticket.
However, £3 Day Tickets purchased on apps are valid on any participating service across Wales.
On cross-border services, the ticket will be valid up to and from the first bus stop in England.
The discount does not apply to long-distance coach services such as National Express, Megabus or Flix Bus, or to premium-fare night and sightseeing buses.
The initiative currently covers 16 to 21-year-olds, but the Welsh Government has confirmed that from November it will be extended to include children aged 5 to 15, meaning families with younger children will also benefit from cheaper fares.
There are some exclusions. The discounted fares are not available on rail journeys and the scheme is not currently compatible with Tap In, Tap Out ticketing.
Passengers must continue to present their mytravelpass to drivers to prove eligibility.
Transport for Wales has said it hopes the reduced fares will encourage greater use of buses among young people, with the longer-term goal of making public transport a more attractive option than private car use.
