By-elections called in two Flintshire wards with votes set for 9 July

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Voters in two Flintshire wards will go to the polls on 9 July after by-elections were called in Argoed and New Brighton and Connah’s Quay Central.

Nomination papers must be submitted to the Returning Officer by 4.00pm on Friday 12 June, leaving candidates less than a week to put their names forward.

The Argoed and New Brighton vacancy was caused by the death of Cllr Hilary McGuill, who passed away on 11 April at the age of 79.

Cllr McGuill was first elected to Flintshire County Council in 1999 as a Liberal Democrat and represented Argoed and New Brighton for more than 25 years.

She served as Chair of the Council in 2011 and most recently held the role of Chair of the Constitution and Democratic Services Committee.

The Connah’s Quay Central vacancy follows the resignation of long-serving Independent councillor Bernie Attridge, who stood down after more than two decades on the council.

Attridge was first elected in 2004 as a Labour councillor and served as the council’s deputy leader before being removed from that role in March 2019.

He left Labour two months later and went on to represent Connah’s Quay Central as an Independent, later leading the Independent Group on Flintshire Council before stepping down from that role in 2024.

Residents wishing to vote in either by-election must be registered by midnight on Tuesday 23 June.

The deadline for postal vote applications is 5.00pm on Wednesday 24 June, and for proxy vote applications 5.00pm on Wednesday 1 July.

Nomination papers are available from the Returning Officer at Tŷ Dewi Sant, St Davids Park, Ewloe, CH5 3FF, or electronically via [email protected].
