Flintshire Council begins second round of cycle barrier removals next week

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Work to remove barriers from cycle paths in Sealand, Connah’s Quay and Garden City is set to begin next week, as Flintshire County Council acts on the results of a public consultation.

Eight barriers are scheduled for removal at four locations in the week beginning 8 June, following an earlier round of work that cleared 11 barriers at Saltney Riverside, Shotton, Flint and Deeside Industrial Park.

The locations due for work from 8 June are Green Lane in Sealand, Rowleys Drive, Wepre Riverside and Garden City.

At most of those sites, the narrow chicane barriers, which are designed to slow cyclists but can block wheelchair users, pushchairs and adapted cycles, will be replaced by a single shared-use bollard.

At one Garden City location, barrier 73, the chicane will be removed without a replacement.

The work follows a consultation that opened in November 2025 and closed on 30 January 2026.

Drop-in sessions were held at Deeside Leisure Centre, the Jade Jones Pavilion in Flint and Flintshire Connects in Holywell to allow residents to view barrier locations and share their experiences of the cycle network.

The majority of responses supported the council’s initial recommendations to remove barriers, according to the published consultation findings.

Some locations drew feedback that differed from the council’s initial view, and those sites are being reviewed separately before any decisions are made.

The work is funded through the Transport for Wales Active Travel Grant.
