Flintshire assistant headteacher wins national apprenticeship award

A Flintshire assistant headteacher has won a national apprenticeship award after completing a leadership qualification while continuing to work across two school sites.
Samantha Stenhoff, Assistant Headteacher at Ysgol Pen Coch, was named Higher Apprentice of the Year at the Cambrian Training Apprenticeship, Employment and Skills Awards on 2 June.
Ysgol Pen Coch is a specialist school supporting children and young people with additional learning needs across North Wales, with sites in Flint and Mold.
Stenhoff completed an ILM Level 5 Leadership and Management Higher Apprenticeship through Portal Training while in post, applying the qualification directly to her role.
During the programme she was involved in whole-school work on digital innovation and curriculum development, aimed at creating more personalised learning for pupils.
She also progressed into the assistant headteacher role while completing the course.
Stenhoff said: “The apprenticeship has changed how I approach leadership. It’s given me the confidence to lead whole-school developments and support others in a more structured way.”
Headteacher Noel Fitzgerald said: “We’re incredibly proud of what Samantha has achieved. Her leadership has had a real impact within the school and is now influencing practice more widely.”
Gwawr Booth, Managing Director at Portal Training, said: “This is exactly what apprenticeships should achieve — developing people in a way that creates real, lasting impact within organisations and across the sector.”
A colleague, Rebecca Kirkpatrick, was also shortlisted for the same award after completing the same qualification through Portal Training.
