Three lurchers at north Wales RSPCA still waiting for homes

Three lurchers at a north Wales RSPCA animal centre are still waiting to find their forever homes after long stays in kennels.

Totoro and Maya, both around two years old, have spent 672 days in RSPCA care at Bryn-y-Maen and have yet to be adopted.

Their stay was extended due to legal processes before they could be put up for rehoming.

A third lurcher, Tinkerbell, has been at the centre for 272 days. She was delayed by medical issues and needed muzzle training but is now ready for adoption.

Staff have worked with Totoro and Maya to build their confidence around cars. Maya is comfortable getting in and sitting inside cars, while Totoro will need more time adjusting in a new home.

Sarah Davies, Animal Care Assistant at the Upper Colwyn Bay centre, said: “Each one of our lurchers has so much love to give and it is so sad that they have yet to be adopted.

“Sadly these lurchers seem to have been overlooked – and we don’t really know why as we know how wonderful they are.

“It could be because of their sighthound heritage people may think they have bags of energy and will need endless walks, and this is possibly another reason why we’ve had limited interest in them. They can actually be very docile. Many lurchers love nothing more than curling up on a comfy sofa or bed.”

Totoro, a black and tan lurcher, enjoys company from both people and other dogs. She loves running, walking, playing, and chewing toys. She can live with children of older primary school age but not with small pets.

Maya, beige and brindle in colour, is friendly and affectionate, enjoys zoomies and would benefit from a secure garden with six-foot fencing. Maya is muzzle trained due to her time in kennels and needs to be the only pet in the home. She could live with secondary school-aged children.

Sarah added: “Maya has a lot of love to give and will make a wonderful addition for the right family – we hope she doesn’t have to wait for too much longer.”

Tinkerbell, a lurcher crossbreed, is described as a sweetheart eager for affection. She has made many friends at the centre and could live with another dog, pending an introduction. Staff feel she would suit a home with children aged eight and over.

To express interest in Totoro, Maya, or Tinkerbell, contact RSPCA Bryn-y-Maen or complete an online application form.

The RSPCA has also launched its Summer Cruelty Appeal, seeking donations to help rescue animals from cruelty and provide vital care. More information is available at rspca.org.uk/endcruelty.
