Vehicle seized and wanted man arrested in Ewloe lorry checks

A man wanted on an extradition warrant was arrested during a joint vehicle safety operation in Ewloe on Tuesday.
Officers from North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit worked alongside the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to check the roadworthiness of vans and HGVs in the area.
Around 40 commercial vehicles were checked in total.
One vehicle was seized after its driver was found to have no insurance.
Several vehicles were found to have no valid MOT.
Six vehicles were found to be overladen.
One vehicle was assessed as being in a dangerous condition and was taken off the road immediately.
One driver was found to be driving without a valid digital tachograph card, the device used to record a driver’s hours behind the wheel.
Another driver was found to be driving with insufficient weekly rest.
One vehicle was immobilised, or cabled, due to faults totalling £3,000 in fines.
An HGV was parked up and immobilised for 45 hours over a number of offences.
Sgt Emma Birrell, of the Roads Crime Unit, said the checks were part of regular efforts to improve road safety.
She said: “We regularly undertake operations like this to increase road safety, identifying vehicles that fail to meet basic road safety standards.”
She added: “The vehicles we focus on do a lot of miles, and therefore regular maintenance is vital. Some of the vehicles assessed were of such a poor standard, they were immediately taken off the road to prevent a potential collision or injury to the driver and other motorists.”
Sgt Birrell said the force would continue carrying out similar operations.
She said: “We will continue to undertake enforcement action to ensure that everyone using our road network does so safely and legally.”
