The last train problem facing hundreds of Flintshire based Wrexham AFC supporters

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A Fflint Wrecsam Senedd member has called on Transport for Wales to introduce a later train for supporters travelling home from midweek Wrexham AFC matches.

Ken Skates said the current timetable on the Wrexham-Bidston line leaves many fans with the choice of either leaving games early or missing the last train home.

He said the issue had been raised with him by constituents and believed hundreds of supporters were affected on a regular basis.

Mr Skates said: “After leaving Wrexham the train goes right through Fflint Wrecsam, so it’s potentially hundreds of my constituents having to either leave early or risk missing the last train.

“I’m sure it will be something Transport for Wales are looking at, and I’ve raised this with them. There must be something that can be done.”

The Wrexham-Bidston service stops at Gwersyllt; Cefn-y-Bedd; Caergwrle; Hope; Penyfford; Buckley; Hawarden; Shotton and Hawarden Bridge – which are all in Mr Skates’ constituency – before going onto the Wirral.

“A constituent from Mancot contacted me about this recently and said the service is regularly used by a few hundred supporters after a match,” said Mr Skates.

“We all know what parking is like in and around the Racecourse, and anything that can be done to encourage more people to use public transport should be considered.

“I have suggested to TfW that they look at introducing a later service on midweek match nights, even if only on a trial basis to begin with. Usage numbers could be monitored and a decision made about future viability at a later date. I hope it’s something they’ll explore.”

Mr Skates previously served as the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Transport and oversaw timetable changes introduced in May, which increased rail services across North Wales by around 50%.
