Storm Darragh: Amber weather warning issued for Flintshire on Saturday

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Residents in Flintshire are bracing for Storm Darragh, with an amber warning for wind in effect from 3.00am to 9.00pm on Saturday, 7 December.

The Met Office is warning of potentially damaging winds, with inland gusts of 60–70 mph and up to 80 mph along exposed coasts and headlands.

Flintshire Council has announced the planned closure of the A548 Flintshire Bridge from 1am on Saturday, 7 December, in response to an amber weather warning for wind issued by the Met Office.

The closure will remain in place until conditions improve, with updates expected as the forecast evolves.

Key Risks Identified

  • Power Cuts: There is a strong likelihood of power outages, which may also affect mobile phone networks and other essential services.
  • Structural Damage: Buildings are at risk of damage, including roof tiles being blown off.
  • Travel Disruption: Longer journey times and cancellations are expected across road, rail, air, and ferry services.
  • Flying Debris: High winds could send debris airborne, posing a risk of injuries or even danger to life.
  • Coastal Hazards: Large waves and beach debris are expected to create dangerous conditions along coastal roads, sea fronts, and nearby properties.

Met Office Guidance

For Driving

Driving during high winds is dangerous. If travel is unavoidable, the Met Office advises:

  • Driving slowly to reduce the impact of gusts.
  • Taking extra care around high-sided vehicles, cyclists, and motorcyclists, especially on exposed roads.
  • Allowing extra space when overtaking or passing lorries, buses, or other vehicles.

Staying Safe Outdoors

The Met Office strongly recommends staying indoors where possible. If you must go out:

  • Avoid walking or sheltering near buildings or trees that could be affected by falling debris.
  • Check and secure loose outdoor items, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, and fences, ahead of the storm.

Coastal Safety

The coast poses a significant risk during the storm. Large waves can sweep people off their feet even when standing onshore. If near cliffs, ensure you know your route and keep dogs on leads.

In emergencies, contact 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Preparing for Power Cuts

Residents are encouraged to prepare for power outages by gathering essentials, such as torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs, in advance.

Why Amber?

The amber warning signifies a medium likelihood of events with a medium impact, highlighting the seriousness of the storm’s potential consequences.

Regions Affected

While Flintshire is among the areas at risk, the warning also covers large parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, and the North West and South West of England.

Residents are urged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and follow advice from emergency services and local authorities.

Storm Darragh’s impact is expected to ease from the west during Saturday afternoon.

The Met Office has also issued two yellow weather warnings for Flintshire and other regions today, forecasting heavy rain and strong winds that may cause travel disruption and surface flooding.

The first warning, in place from 2 pm to 6 pm today, predicts heavy rain with the potential to cause surface flooding and travel disruption.

Flintshire could see rainfall of 20–30 mm within a few hours, accompanied by gusty winds.

The Met Office warns that road spray and flooding are “likely” to increase journey times, while bus and train services could face delays. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, with specific advice to avoid driving through standing water.

The second warning, effective from 3 pm today to 3 am tomorrow, highlights the risk of disruption from gusts of 40–50 mph inland and up to 60–70 mph in exposed coastal areas.
