The Senedd has approved regulations to prohibit the supply of single-use vapes in Wales, marking a significant step in addressing plastic waste and litter pollution.
The new law, known as The Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (Wales) Regulations 2024, will come into effect on 1 June 2025.
From this date, the sale or free distribution of single-use vapes will be banned, reflecting the Welsh Government’s commitment to tackling environmental harm caused by disposable products.
Environmental Impact
Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, Huw Irranca-Davies, hailed the vote as a “major step forward in tackling throwaway culture.” He stated:
“Removing single-use vapes from the supply chain will stop them harming wildlife and the environment when they’re littered or sent to landfill. This ban will mean we generate less waste, clean up our streets, and protect nature and wildlife.”
Single-use vapes are increasingly criticised for their environmental impact, as they contribute to plastic pollution and pose hazards to wildlife when improperly discarded.
The ban in Wales coincides with similar measures being introduced across the UK. The Welsh Government has worked with the UK Government and other devolved administrations to ensure a unified rollout, simplifying compliance and enforcement.
This coordinated approach is intended to maximise the ban’s effectiveness while providing clarity for businesses and consumers alike.
What This Means for Businesses
Retailers and businesses are urged to act now to prepare for the new regulations. Businesses are advised to:
- Speak with suppliers about sourcing alternatives to single-use vapes.
- Educate staff and customers about the upcoming changes.
- Arrange for the safe disposal of any existing stock of single-use vapes.
By 1 June 2025, no single-use vapes can be sold or distributed, either for a fee or for free, across Wales.
This legislation forms part of a wider Welsh Government strategy to address waste and pollution. The measures aim to reduce litter, conserve natural habitats, and further embed sustainability in Wales’ economy and society.
