Repair hubs praised for helping Flintshire families save money

Repair and reuse cafés in Flintshire have played an important role in helping local residents save money and reduce waste, according to data collected from the Welsh Government and highlighted by North Wales Senedd Member Carolyn Thomas.
The cafés provide community spaces where volunteers help people repair broken items, including small electrical appliances, furniture, clothing, and bicycles. This approach extends the life of everyday goods, cuts waste, and encourages practical skills in the local community.
In the current financial year 2024-2025, Flintshire’s repair cafés have completed a total of 324 repairs. Across Wales, nearly 8,000 repairs have been made at 100 repair café locations, preventing over 28 tonnes of items from being discarded and saving an estimated 262 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
According to figures from Repair Café Wales, each repaired item saves an average of £83.38 compared to the cost of buying a new one. This means Flintshire families have collectively saved thousands of pounds this year.
Carolyn Thomas MS said: “Repair and reuse facilities in Flintshire are helping people fix everyday items, keeping them in use longer, and keeping more money in residents’ pockets whilst tackling climate change by reducing waste.”
“Many of these items, if not repaired or reused, would become obsolete, be thrown away, and in many cases, end up in landfill sites. The repair and reuse hubs represent a win-win both for the planet, and for people’s wallets.”
Flintshire’s main repair and reuse centre, Refurbs Buckley, is located at 9 Brunswick Road in Buckley and includes a community café.
