A Flintshire children’s health care worker has been named a winner at the prestigious 2025 WellChild Awards.

Jackie Sumner, a Senior Health Care Support Worker specialising in supporting children with complex medical needs, will travel to London on 8 September to collect the Outstanding Professional Award at the annual ceremony.

Jackie has worked in the Children’s Community Team for more than 18 years, providing care in homes, schools and across the community. She was nominated by her colleague Amanda D’arcy, who praised her dedication, compassion and the support she offers to both families and colleagues.

Amanda said: “Jackie works over and above her job role and deserves for her hard work, care, compassion and dedication to be acknowledged. Jackie can shy away from praise and compliments; however, I feel a WellChild Award will illustrate to her what a positive impact she has had, and continues to have, on the children and young people she supports, as well as their families and the team she works in.”

Jackie was chosen from hundreds of nominations across the UK. Judges recognised her role in creating memory-making moments, helping children attend school during end-of-life care, and offering families practical and emotional support. She has also trained in baby massage to help parents bond with their children when they cannot be held.

Jackie will receive her award at a star-studded ceremony where she will meet WellChild Patron Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, at a private reception.

Prince Harry said: “I am always privileged to attend the WellChild Awards and meet the incredible children, families and professionals who inspire us all with their strength and spirit. For 20 years these Awards have highlighted the courage of young people living with complex health needs and shone a light on the devoted caregivers – family and professionals – who support them every step of the way. Their stories remind us of the power of compassion, connection and community.”

WellChild Chief Executive, Matt James, said: “People like Jackie embody what the WellChild Awards are all about – strength, compassion and the will to help children thrive in the face of adversity. We’re proud to have been celebrating their incredible stories for the past 20 years.”

The WellChild Awards, in association with GSK, celebrate the achievements of seriously ill children and those who support them.
