Police issue dispersal order for Chester city centre ahead of busy festive weekend

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A dispersal order will be in effect in Chester city centre this weekend as police prepare for increased footfall during the first full weekend of December.

With large crowds expected for Christmas festivities, Cheshire Police has confirmed an enhanced police presence to ensure the safety of visitors and residents.

The dispersal order, implemented under Section 34 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, will be in place from 4 pm on Friday, 6 December, until 4 pm on Sunday, 8 December.

This measure allows officers to direct individuals to leave the city centre and ban them from returning for up to 48 hours if necessary to prevent crime or anti-social behaviour.

The designated area covered by the order is mapped, and copies of the map will be provided to anyone issued with a direction to leave.

Police Presence to Tackle Anti-Social Behaviour

Inspector James Wilson of Cheshire Police stated:

“This weekend we expect it will be incredibly busy in Chester, as it always is in the run-up to Christmas, especially as this is the first full weekend of December. We hope everyone enjoys their time here, whether they are enjoying day-time activities or the night-time economy, and we would urge people to do so safely.

“With this in mind, there will be a dispersal order in place. These orders are often issued at times of increased footfall, to serve as an additional tactical option that allows us to directly combat anti-social behaviour head on, before it escalates, and ensure everyone stays safe while out and about.

“While you might see an increased police presence over Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday, please continue to enjoy your time in Chester and explore the many festive sights that the city has to offer.”

How the Dispersal Order Works

The dispersal order gives police officers the authority to remove individuals causing or likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress. Offenders who return to the designated area within the specified timeframe can face prosecution.

The measure is one of several steps being taken to ensure that Chester remains a safe and enjoyable destination during the busy festive period.

Cheshire Police encourages anyone with information about anti-social behaviour to get in touch via the Cheshire Police website or by calling 101.
