New parents in Flintshire urged to claim Child Benefit as soon as baby’s birth is registered

HMRC is urging new parents in Flintshire and across the UK to claim Child Benefit as soon as their baby’s birth is registered, after new figures showed around a third do not claim before their child’s first birthday.
HMRC said 6.8 million families received Child Benefit in the year to August 2025.
Of those, 68.8% claimed before their baby’s first birthday.
Child Benefit is worth £27.05 a week, or £1,406.60 a year, for the eldest or only child, and £17.90 a week, or £930.80 a year, for each additional child.
There is no limit on the number of children parents can claim for.
Claims can be made 48 hours after the baby’s birth is registered, but HMRC said they can only be backdated three months.
Parents who delay claiming beyond that point lose the entitlement for any weeks earlier than the three-month backdate window.
HMRC said more than 140,000 babies were born across the UK between April and June 2024.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “Spring is a wonderful time to welcome a baby and claiming Child Benefit as soon as possible means your family can benefit from much-needed financial support.”
Ms Lloyd said: “It is quick and easy to claim Child Benefit via the HMRC app at a time that suits you.”
To make a claim, parents need their child’s birth or adoption certificate, bank details and a National Insurance number for themselves and their partner.
Children born outside the UK also require a passport or travel document.
Payments are made every four weeks into a bank account.
Parents whose income, or whose partner’s income, is more than £60,000 a year will be liable for the High-Income Child Benefit Charge.
Information on how to pay through PAYE is available on GOV.UK.
New parents can claim Child Benefit via the HMRC app or online at GOV.UK.
Local support and advice on benefit claims is available from Citizens Advice Flintshire.
