Welsh Water to spend £7m upgrading Pantymwyn wastewater works

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Welsh Water is investing £7 million to upgrade wastewater infrastructure serving Pantymwyn and Cilcain, after regulators tightened the standards the current treatment works must meet.

The existing Pantymwyn wastewater treatment works cleans wastewater from both villages before returning it to the local watercourse.

Welsh Water says the site is too small to fit the extra treatment equipment needed to meet stricter environmental standards, so it will instead convert the site into a pumping station.

Wastewater will be pumped roughly 3km through a new pipeline to Maes-y-Groes treatment works, where separate improvement works will handle the additional flow.

The pipeline will run mainly across private agricultural land, starting at Pantymwyn and working towards Maes-y-Groes.

O’Connor Utilities and its subcontractors will carry out the work, due to start in summer 2026 and finish by the end of 2027.

Welsh Water says most work will take place on its own sites and on farmland, with no impact expected on water or wastewater services to homes, though residents may notice more construction traffic in the area.

Clwyd MS Darren Millar, whose constituency covers Pantymwyn, welcomed the investment.

‘I very much welcome this significant investment in Pantymwyn and the surrounding area,’ he said.

‘Such investment is vital if we are to protect our local environment and improve the health of our rivers for future generations.’

Millar said affected landowners had already been made aware of the work, and said he expected disruption to residents to be minimal.

‘I look forward to seeing this project delivered successfully and encourage Welsh Water to continue engaging closely with the community as work progresses,’ he said.

The scheme forms part of a wider £2.5 billion Welsh Water investment programme in environmental projects between 2025 and 2030
