Candidates confirmed for two Flintshire by-elections next week

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Flintshire County Council has confirmed the candidates standing in two by-elections on Thursday 9 July.

Six candidates are standing in Argoed and New Brighton and seven in Connah’s Quay Central.

In Argoed and New Brighton, the candidates are Peter Agnew for Welsh Labour, Faron Hadfield-Jones for the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Angela Hughes for Reform UK Wales, Hazel Pamela Lynes for the Welsh Conservative Party, Jack Morris for Plaid Cymru and Meilir Devine Roberts for the Wales Green Party.

In Connah’s Quay Central, the candidates are Peter Davies for Welsh Labour, Edwin Duggan standing as an Independent, Lee Lavery for the Wales Green Party, Dewi Ellis Parry for the Welsh Conservative Party, Richard Pooley for Plaid Cymru, Dave Vernon for Reform UK Wales and Andrew John Williams standing as an Independent.

The Argoed and New Brighton seat became vacant after the death of Cllr Hilary McGuill on 11 April, aged 79.

Cllr McGuill was first elected to Flintshire County Council in 1999 as a Liberal Democrat and represented the ward for more than 25 years.

She served as Chair of the Council in 2011 and was most recently Chair of the Constitution and Democratic Services Committee.

The Connah’s Quay Central seat became vacant after the resignation of Independent councillor Bernie Attridge, who had served on the council for more than two decades.

Cllr Attridge was first elected in 2004 as a Labour councillor and served as the council’s deputy leader before being removed from that role in March 2019.

He left Labour two months later, went on to represent Connah’s Quay Central as an Independent and later led the Independent Group on Flintshire Council, stepping down from that role in 2024.

A separate by-election for a seat on Connah’s Quay Town Council’s Central Ward is also being held on 9 July, with a different list of candidates.

Polling stations for both county by-elections will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 9 July.

In Argoed and New Brighton, polling stations are at the Community Centre in Mynydd Isa, the Women’s Institute on Chambers Lane in Mynydd Isa and the Community Centre in New Brighton.

In Connah’s Quay Central, polling stations are at the Community Centre on Tuscan Way and Bryn Deva CP School on Linden Avenue, both in Connah’s Quay.
