Loggerheads Country Park reopens refurbished visitor centre and café

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Improvement works at Loggerheads Country Park have been completed, with a launch event held earlier this month to mark the finish of a project including new flood defences and a refurbished visitor centre.

The park, a gateway to the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape and one of the busiest sites managed by Denbighshire County Council, received funding as part of a £10.95m UK Government grant announced in 2023 for 10 capital projects supporting Ruthin and the surrounding rural area. The money was awarded exclusively for these projects and cannot be spent elsewhere.

Following planning approval in 2024, work at Loggerheads included upgrades to the main visitor buildings, a new external canopy with additional seating, improved visitor access, and flood mitigation measures. The scheme was delivered by contractors MWT, Waterco and Park City, designed by TACP, and completed earlier this year.

A further £149,000 was secured to add solar panels and sustainable drainage planters incorporating wildlife habitats, with options for a future hydro scheme still being explored. Once fully operational, the site is expected to generate 60 to 70 per cent of its own energy needs through renewable power.

The June launch event showcased the flood alleviation scheme alongside the refurbished visitor centre, café, meeting room, outdoor spaces and public toilets. Attendees were given a guided tour and afternoon tea, provided by the new operator of the Tŷ’r Felin café.

Councillor Jason McLellan, Denbighshire’s Council Leader and Lead Member for Economic Growth and Tackling Deprivation, said the improvements were designed to manage growing visitor numbers.

‘The project at Loggerheads Country Park was significant and it’s fantastic to see the site now that the works have been completed,’ he said.

‘These sites are much loved National Landscape areas, and it is important that we continue to maintain and develop sites such as these as their popularity grows to ensure that they can continue to be enjoyed by all who visit.’
