Motorcyclist stopped at 96mph on return trip to Wirral from north Wales found with illegal tyre

A motorcyclist travelling at 96mph on a return journey to the Wirral from north Wales has been stopped by North Wales Police roads officers and found to be riding on an illegal rear tyre, with a pillion passenger on board.
Officers on Operation Apex patrols made the stop.
The rider was issued a Traffic Offence Report for excess speed and for the defective tyre.
PC 3718 Jackson of the Roads Crime Unit said: “As officers we regularly see the consequences of collisions that could have easily been prevented.
“Today was an example of the rider putting themselves, along with their pillion passenger, and other road users at unnecessary risk.”
“A few moments checking over your tyres before every ride could prevent a serious collision.”
Operation Apex runs from early spring through to autumn each year, targeting the period that sees the highest number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured on north Wales roads.
Twelve motorcyclists and a pillion passenger were killed in north Wales in 2025, compared to six in 2024.
Serious motorcycle casualties rose by 38.8 per cent over the same period.
North Wales Police said officers from the Roads Crime Unit patrol key routes identified as risk areas throughout the campaign, and also work with the National Police Air Service helicopter to identify dangerous riding and direct ground units to locations.
Chief Inspector Rob Rands, of North Wales Police Operational Support Services, said: “Sadly, motorcyclists are amongst the most vulnerable groups of road users, and they are at a higher risk of injury and collision than other road users.”
“We will focus our enforcement in an attempt to reduce any further casualties and collisions by adopting a zero-tolerance approach.”
Sergeant Leigh McCann of the Roads Crime Unit said: “Whilst the vast majority of motorists ride or drive appropriately, we will continue to target — with a view to prosecution — all those that ride or drive dangerously, at excess speed, overtake on solid white lines or commit any other road traffic offences.”
North Wales Police said further road safety advice is available at orlo.uk/vkLzD
Motorcyclists are also being encouraged to book onto BikeSafe workshops via bikesafe.co.uk
