Welsh Ambulance Service stands down critical incident declared during extreme heat

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

The Welsh Ambulance Service has stood down a critical incident declared three days ago during the recent period of extreme heat, but has warned that demand on 999 remains high.

The incident was stood down at 10:21 this morning, Monday 29 June, having been declared on Friday 26 June.

The service said sustained pressure over three days as a result of the extreme heat had driven demand well in excess of normal levels.

Judith Bryce, Assistant Director of Operations at the Welsh Ambulance Service, said:

“Although we have now stood down the critical incident, there is still significant pressure and demand for our services.”

“Accordingly, we would encourage people to only call 999 if it is a serious or life-threatening emergency.”

“People contacting us with less serious conditions are still likely to experience longer waits and we would encourage them to consider alternatives to 999.”

The service is asking anyone who is unwell or has a minor injury to use the NHS 111 Wales website at 111.wales.nhs.uk rather than calling 999.

The Welsh Ambulance Service described the past three days as one of the busiest periods of sustained pressure it has experienced in recent years.
