Heat pump grant for Welsh households on heating oil rises to £9,000 from July

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Rural households in Wales on heating oil will be able to claim a £9,000 grant to switch to a heat pump from 21 July, after the UK Government increased the available funding by £1,500.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is rising from £7,500 to £9,000, a 20% increase, to help households that rely on heating oil rather than mains gas make the switch to electric heat pumps.

Leaflets are landing this week on the doormats of 10,000 eligible homes in Wales with details of how to apply.

Rural parts of Flintshire, where mains gas is not always available and heating oil is more common, are among the areas where households could be eligible.

The scheme is run by the UK Government and administered by energy regulator Ofgem.

Heating oil is not covered by the energy price cap that protects gas and electricity customers, leaving households that rely on it more exposed to price swings driven by global oil markets.

Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey said:

“This government is determined to bring down energy bills, but I know the war in the Middle East has hit households on heating oil especially hard.”

“We have already taken action to support these households through confirming over £50 million in support for vulnerable customers on heating oil.”

“Now, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will help thousands of families in Wales switch to clean heat to protect them from volatile fossil fuels.”

Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens said:

“Wales has a high number of households who rely on heating oil and I know many are feeling the pressure of rising bills caused by global fossil fuel price spikes.”

“The Boiler Upgrade Scheme will be available to households across Wales, helping to make our energy cleaner and more secure, while also protecting people’s pockets.”

To qualify, households must use an installer certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), which sets quality standards for small-scale renewable energy installations.

Households can search for a certified installer at mcscertified.com.
