The Met Office, in partnership with Met Éireann and the Dutch weather service KNMI, has revealed the storm names for the 2025-26 season, with every name submitted by the public.

More than 50,000 suggestions were received across the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands.

The final list includes names inspired by family members, cherished pets and personal stories.

The first three storms of the season will be Amy, Bram and Chandra.

Amy was the most popular female name submitted to the Met Office, with many people linking it to loved ones who enjoyed the outdoors.

Other names include Dave, described by one contributor as “my beloved husband who can snore three times louder than any storm,” and Violet, chosen in honour of a daughter born prematurely who was “every bit as fierce and unstoppable as a storm.”

Pets were also remembered, with Oscar the cat described as “a good boy, but crazy when he gets the zoomies.”

Rebekah Hicks, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said:

“Naming storms isn’t just about giving them a label, it’s about making sure people take notice. When a storm has a name, it becomes easier for the media and public to talk about it, share information, and prepare. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference in helping communities stay safe, protect their homes, and make informed decisions ahead of severe weather.”

She added that naming storms has been shown to raise awareness, with surveys after Storm Floris in August finding 93% of people in the amber warning area were aware of alerts and 83% took action to prepare.

Eoin Sherlock, Head of Forecasting Division at Met Éireann, said:
“Even though the process of selecting the names was a fun and light-hearted task, ultimately, advising the public of the importance of being prepared for the upcoming storm season, and communicating safety messages for every forecast storm are our highest priorities.”

The storm season runs from September to August. Last season six storms were named, reaching Storm Floris in August 2025.

Some seasons see only a handful of named storms, while others, like 2023-24 with its record 12, are far more active.

The full 2025-26 list includes: Amy, Bram, Chandra, Dave, Eddie, Fionnuala, Gerard, Hannah, Isla, Janna, Kasia, Lilith, Marty, Nico, Oscar, Patrick, Ruby, Stevie, Tadhg, Violet and Wubbo.
