Update: Conwy tunnel reopens following safety system fault

Update: Traffic Wales has said the Conwy tunnel has reopened following an earlier safety system fault.
In a statement the Welsh Governments roads agency said: “Following emergency investigation and rectifying works on the safety systems today, the Conwy tunnel has now reopened in both directions to all traffic.
Traffic Wales first issued an alert at around 8.30am, confirming the full closure on the A55.
In an update at 11:09am, Traffic Wales North & Mid said:
“A fault has been identified within the tunnel’s safety systems. Work is ongoing on site to investigate the fault. It is not possible for traffic to pass through until the fault has been repaired. Please allow more time for your journey.”

Traffic is queueing back to Penmaenmawr on the eastbound carriageway, while westbound delays stretch to Colwyn Bay.
Llandudno Junction is reported to be heavily congested as drivers attempt to leave the A55, with further delays on the A470 in Glan Conwy.
Traffic Wales has urged motorists to plan ahead and expect delays until engineers are able to resolve the issue.
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy commented:
“The A55 Conwy Tunnel is a vital transport artery for North West Wales, so the traffic chaos caused with its closure is unsurprising.
“I have every confidence that the Traffic Wales team are using all the levers at their disposal to identify the cause of the problems and deliver a solution.
“We can all help them and all communities on the diversion route by only travelling if totally necessary.”
