How Casino Bonuses Have Changed for UK Players

Casino bonuses have been around since the first online casino. They’re how operators market, attract, and retrain players. It could be a deposit bonus, reload offers, free spins, VIP program, loyalty rewards, the list goes on.

Naturally, though, how these promotions work now is slightly different to how they used to work a couple of years ago. Offers are generally much simpler, the terms are clearer, and the experience, well, is more player-friendly.

Bonuses began in physical casinos. They come in the form of free drinks, chips, loyalty perks, etc., to keep players in the building. Therefore, as you can imagine, as the industry started shifting to online, operators translated these incentives into digital incentives.

The incentives vary. Some offer deposit matches and others free spins, VIP clubs, and more. There isn’t too much difference if you think about it. The main difference is scale. These bonuses could be advertised to millions online, driving the competition up on “who can provide the best bonus”.

Nowadays, you see some wildly different bonuses. Some offer heavy rewards but have high wager requirements, while others have less heavy rewards but are wagerless. The best? Well, that depends on your risk profile. Each bonus seems to target a different type of customer to another.

Where UK Bonuses Stand Today

Each year, bonuses are getting more advanced. Because of this, many operators offer bonuses with wager requirements as little as 10x. Casino promotions with free spins and 0x wager requirements are now common place amongst most online casinos, despite never really being a thing a few years ago. However, since competition is at an all-time high, the baseline of “good” bonuses has changed completely.

The cost of acquiring customers in the iGaming industry is through the roof, but customer value has never been higher. Therefore, operators feel comfortable offering such bonuses that benefit the customer more than themselves. This way, they can reduce the friction of customer acquisition and focus on customer retention strategies.

UK operators are continuously fighting for a way to differentiate themselves from one another. Because of this, AI personalisation will start being introduced to UK bonuses. Using AI for such has given some operators a 20% improvement in player retention already.

For both operators and players, this is a massive benefit. Operators get to offer personalised bonuses to their customers, and their customers get bonuses more suited to their play style, deposit history, and activity patterns.

Retention is the main KPI for online casinos. In fact, 2% of casino players make up more than 50% of an operator’s earnings. That’s why we’ve seen loyalty programmes, like VIP schemes, tiered-reward systems, and cashback programmes, improve. Often, these drive a user’s decision to join the platform much more than the initial welcome offer.

Without question, welcome offers are still important. But that’s only a quarter of the job. The other three quarters are keeping them. That’s why we’ll see a huge shift in bonus strategies that reflect exactly that.
