All the candidates for two Flintshire by-elections today

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

There are two by-elections happening this week to fill vacancies on Flintshire County Council.

The first, in Connah’s Quay Central, follows the resignation of long-time Connah’s Quay councillor Bernie Attridge.

The second, in Argoed and New Brighton, is as a result of the sad passing earlier this year of Cllr Hilary McGuill.

Candidates have lined up for both Flintshire County Council contests in recent weeks, canvassing for votes to be the next voices of Flintshire residents.

Polls will open at 7am on Thursday, July 9 and close at 10pm.

Residents in Connah’s Quay will be able to cast their vote at either the Community Centre on Tuscan Way or at Ysgol Bryn Deva.

In Argoed and New Brighton voters can make their choice at Mynydd Isa Community Centre, The Women’s Institute on Chambers Lane in Mynydd Isa or New Brighton Community Centre.

Here is a quick round-up of all the candidates in the running.

Every party and candidate was given an opportunity to provide information, where not is included, no response was provided.

Connah’s Quay Central

  • Peter Davies, Welsh Labour

Peter Davies has lived his whole life in Connah’s Quay. He is currently serving on Connah’s Quay Town Council and has done for the last five years. He is also a school governor at two local schools.

A veteran, having served with the 3rd Battalion in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, he has also volunteered as an adult instructor with Clwyd and Gwynedd Army Cadet Force and over the last 14 years has organised the annual Remembrance Service at the War Memorial.

  • Edwin Duggan, Independent

Edwin Duggan says he is in touch with what the Connah’s Quay electorate want.

“I’m fully conversant with the frustrations of the community, weary of being ignored and underserved,” he said. “Bin collections, council tax increases, fly tipping, environmental neglect, HMO overdevelopment, antisocial behaviour and crime.

“I pledge to be easily accessible and be steadfast and un-swayed by the pressures of party politics, prioritising the needs of those who live within the local community,

“My focus will revolve around comprehensive community welfare.”

  • Lee Lavery, Wales Green Party

Raised in Mostyn, Lee earned a Masters in Mathematics from Durham University and worked for a London software company.

After returning to Flintshire he cared for his parents and worked in mental health. He believes the region has not had fair play from Welsh Government and recently stood for the Green Party in the Fflint Wrecsam Senedd election.

  • Dewi Ellis-Parry, Conservatives
  • Richard Pooley, Plaid Cymru
  • Dave Vernon – Reform UK Wales

Dave Vernon believes he is the fresh start Connah’s Quay needs. He also stood for Reform in the Fflint Wrecsam Senedd Election.

“I’ve lived and worked here for over 40 years. For 25 years I’ve helped local people and businesses through my work in adult education.

“I’m not a career politician, I get things done. I will fight for safer, cleaner streets, take firm action on anti-social behaviour and stand up for local families, businesses and services.

“Connah’s Quay needs a fresh start – someone who will listen, act and deliver.

  • Andrew John Williams, Independent

Andrew, who stood as an Independent in the Fflint Wrecsam Senedd Election, believes in supporting families with the cost of living.

He wants to help reduce the cost of living by revamping how we pay for goods. He also wants to influence policy around hospitality, introducing new licensing conditions to restrict alcohol sales but extend opening times to allowing people to filter out over time and reduce antisocial behaviour.

One candidate is only standing for the vacant seat on Connah’s Quay Town Council:

  • Selina Callender-Robins, Independent

Originally from Caernarfon, Selina – who speaks Welsh as her first language – has made Connah’s Quay her home for two decades.

“This is the town I chose to build my life in but I believe it has lost its way,” she said.

“I work in HR and am known for clear communication and supporting people. For me, it’s simple: people before politics – always.

“I want residents to feel listened to, understood, and genuinely represented in the decisions that affect their everyday lives.

Argoed and New Brighton

  • Peter Agnew, Welsh Labour

A retired headteacher, Peter has extensive leadership experience. He is currently the Chair of Flintshire Local Voluntary Council and volunteers with Citizens Advice.

A passionate advocate for education and social justice, he has strong experience in bringing people together to solve local problems.

Peter is committed to being an active, visible and accessible councillor to residents of Argoed and New Brighton.

  • Faron Hadfield-Jones, Welsh Liberal Democrats

A community councillor for Mynydd Isa, Faron Hadfield-Jones says he will build on her Liberal Democrat legacy.

“I promise to take action to fix potholes, tackle anti-social parking and build on local successes like saving the local bus service into Mold,” he said.

“Making the step from the community council to county council will give me a great opportunity to continue Hilary’s record of service for our unique and wonderful community as well as building on my own desires to see a flourishing and well connected local community.”

  • Angela Hughes, Reform UK Wales
  • Hazel Lynes, Welsh Conservatives
  • Jack Morris, Plaid Cymru

Jack Morris believes he and Plaid Cymru can help deliver the change that the people of Argoed and New Brighton want.

“Our community needs change and good representation at county level, I’m proud to be a candidate to help deliver this change,” he said.

He is currently serving on Argoed Community Council.

  • Meilir Roberts, Wales Green Party
