How Broughton’s youth club became a lifeline in just one year

Broughton Youth Club has marked its first anniversary, celebrating a year of community spirit, partnership and positive impact on young people across the village.
Founded in September 2024, the club is the only one of its kind in Flintshire, created through a unique partnership between Flintshire Youth Service and a dedicated group of local volunteers.
The project began as an idea from Cllr Chrissy Gee, who recognised a lack of youth provision in Broughton and worked to re-establish it.
“I first approached FCC Youth Services three years ago, to request the youth work provision in Broughton be reestablished,” said Cllr Gee. “Youth service manager Matt Hayes and his team and I worked together to introduce a new way of working in partnership with the community. This approach is a key component to the Youth Service across Flintshire becoming sustainable, ensuring that every young person across the county has access to high quality youth service.
“I am extremely grateful to the local businesses and volunteers who are supporting delivery through donations and fundraising. This service is an asset to Broughton and I thank the enthusiastic youth workers for all they do.”
Over the past year, the youth club has flourished thanks to the efforts of local residents, volunteers and organisations, including vital support from Broughton and Bretton Community Centre, which hosts weekly sessions.
Funding for the club has come from a mix of local donations and a successful bid to the Police and Community Trust (PACT), supported by an online vote and written by the club committee. Cllr Gee played a key role in securing the funding, further strengthening her commitment to supporting Broughton’s young people.
Since opening, the youth club has attracted large numbers of children and teenagers each week. Activities range from creative workshops and outdoor challenges to community projects and social events, creating a safe, fun and supportive space for young people to connect.
The club’s success has been driven by a committed committee of volunteers, a team of youth workers, and close collaboration with local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to support young people both inside and outside the club.
“Keeping Broughton Youth Club running is a real team effort,” said Rachel Allen, Treasurer of Broughton Youth Club. “While Flintshire Youth Service supports our youth workers, everything else depends on local fundraising. We’re always grateful for any support from businesses and the community.
“We are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in just one year. None of this would have been possible without the time, energy and heart of our volunteers, youth workers, local organisations, and of course, the amazing young people who attend every week. With continued support, we believe Broughton Youth Club will go from strength to strength.”
As it looks to the future, Broughton Youth Club says it remains committed to providing a welcoming and inspiring space for local young people to grow, connect and thrive.
