Flintshire: 44-tonne lorry recorded at 85mph during police speed checks on A55
A 44-tonne articulated lorry was recorded travelling at 85mph on the A55 at Broughton during police speed checks on Thursday afternoon.
Officers from North Wales Police’s Roads Policing Unit stopped the vehicle during speed enforcement activity.
Further checks found offences relating to the driver’s tachograph, the device fitted to lorries that records driving hours, speed and rest breaks.
The driver also had no valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, the qualification lorry drivers must hold to drive professionally.
The driver has been reported for summons, meaning they will be prosecuted through the courts.
The national speed limit for articulated lorries on dual carriageways is 60mph.
The stop was part of Operation Spotlight, a four-week national road safety campaign running throughout July, led by the National Police Chiefs’ Council.
The campaign targets the five offences most commonly linked to deaths and serious injuries on the roads, known as the Fatal Five: drink or drug driving, speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and careless driving.
Sergeant Chris Evans of North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit said: “Our message is simple – take care on the roads. The consequences of not doing so are potentially deadly to you, your passengers and other road users.”
Chief Inspector Rob Rands from the force’s Operational Support Services said: “Every fatality on our roads is a tragedy, that is why we are committed to keeping the roads safe and will continue to act against those who commit offences on our roads.
“We are about to see a huge influx of visitors into the region so we all need to be as safe as possible.
“We make no apology for stopping drivers who are committing a fatal five offence – please heed the warning.”
