Asda and Food and Drink Wales launch supplier training programme
Asda is to run a training programme for more than 30 Welsh food and drink suppliers alongside Food and Drink Wales, the Welsh Government’s food and drink division.
The scheme was announced at the Royal Welsh Show, which ran from 20 to 23 July at Llanelwedd near Builth Wells.
It will run over three days between August and October.
Suppliers will spend the first day at Asda’s Coryton store in Cardiff, where the company said they will meet senior directors and store managers to talk through their business proposals and get one-to-one feedback.
A second day at Asda’s Chepstow depot will cover supply chain and logistics, including how to book a delivery slot at one of the retailer’s depots.
The final day will be at Asda’s head office in Leeds and will cover finance, trading and the company’s internal systems.
Asda said the programme will also cover compliance, marketing, product development and account management.
Maisie McNab, Asda local buyer for Wales, said:
“Supporting local suppliers is crucial for a strong and thriving supply chain in Wales.”
She said the programme would give producers “hands-on and practical advice”.
Businesses signed up include South Caernarfon Creameries’ Dragon Cheese, Popty Conwy Bakery, the Cardiff drinks company Lowes Pop and Radnor Hills.
Carmarthen firm Tovali Soft Drinks, which has supplied dilutable squash to Asda for more than 13 years, is also taking part.
Karen Davies, operations and commercial director at Tovali, said:
“We’re looking forward to working closely with the team, enhancing an already valued relationship, and learning more about working cohesively at all stages of the supply chain, something that will ultimately increase customer value.”
Llyr Gruffydd MS, the Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability, said:
“Wales has a proud and growing food and drink sector, built on the quality, innovation and ambition of businesses right across the country.”
He said the Welsh Government would continue working with retailers through the development of its National Food Strategy.
