HMRC reminds millions of Self Assessment taxpayers of 31 July payment deadline

Millions of Self Assessment taxpayers have one month to prepare for a payment deadline, HM Revenue and Customs has warned.
The second payments on account deadline falls on 31 July, with HMRC urging people to pay or set up a payment plan ahead of time.
Payments on account are advance payments towards the next Self Assessment tax bill, split into two instalments each equal to half the previous year’s tax owed.
The first instalment was due on 31 January, with the second due at midnight on 31 July.
Taxpayers do not need to make payments on account if their tax bill last year was less than £1,000, or if more than 80 per cent of the tax they owed was collected outside Self Assessment, for example through their tax code.
HMRC said payments can be made through the HMRC app, which has processed more than 110,000 payments since April and nearly two million since it launched for Self Assessment in January 2022.
Taxpayers who expect their bill to be lower than last year can apply to reduce their payments on account through GOV.UK.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “We know managing a Self Assessment tax bill isn’t always straightforward and we are here to help.”
“From paying instantly via the HMRC app to spreading the cost through a payment plan, there’s support available for every customer.”
“Search ‘Pay your Self Assessment tax bill’ on GOV.UK to choose the payment option that works for you.”
Customers who cannot pay in full can set up weekly or monthly payment plans, with any payments already made counting towards their next bill.
The deadline for submitting Self Assessment tax returns and paying any remaining tax owed for the 2025 to 2026 tax year is 31 January 2027.
HMRC also reminded sole traders and landlords with annual turnover above £50,000 that they are now required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, submitting quarterly updates through compatible software.
The first quarterly submission deadline for the 2026 to 2027 tax year is 7 August 2026.
From mid-July 2026, around 300,000 Self Assessment customers will have Child Benefit payment information pre-populated on their online tax return to help those liable for the High Income Child Benefit Charge complete their return accurately.
HMRC warned that criminals regularly impersonate the tax authority to steal money or personal information, and urged taxpayers not to click links in unexpected messages or share their HMRC sign-in details.
Full payment options and guidance are available at GOV.UK by searching “Pay your Self Assessment tax bill.”
