Flint residents warned of possible TV signal disruption during network upgrades

Mobile networks in Flint are being upgraded to boost speed, performance and coverage, but residents are being advised there is a small chance these improvements could affect television reception.

The work may cause interference to TV services received through an aerial, including Freeview, BT, TalkTalk and YouView. Symptoms could include intermittent sound, pixelation or loss of signal.

Free help is available from Restore TV, an independent programme created by Mova (Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited) — a body owned by the UK’s main mobile operators, EE, Virgin Media O2 and VodafoneThree.

Restore TV helps ensure people can continue to enjoy free-to-view television if mobile service upgrades cause interference. The programme operates under the oversight of Ofcom’s Coexistence Technical Working Group, which monitors the protection of TV viewers’ interests.

Ben Roome, CEO of Restore TV, said: “We know just how important TV is to inform, entertain and provide welcome company. Restore TV exists to ensure we all can continue to access free-to-view TV as mobile services are improved across the country.”

He added that Restore TV can provide a free filter to fit between an aerial lead and a TV or set-top box. This helps block mobile signals and restore normal TV reception. Instructions are included, and extra help is available online or by phone.

In most cases, fitting the filter resolves the issue, but where it does not, a Restore TV engineer may be able to visit the home free of charge, depending on eligibility.

Extra support is available for residents aged 75 and over, people registered blind or partially sighted, or anyone receiving benefits such as Personal Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance, Constant Attendance Allowance or War Pensioner’s Mobility Support.

Cable and satellite services, such as Sky or Virgin Media, are not affected, although viewers who also use Freeview or another aerial service can still request a free filter.

Residents are more likely to notice disruption if they live in an area with a weak digital TV signal, use a booster, or have an aerial located near a mobile mast.

Restore TV also supports landlords and property managers if interference affects flats or shared buildings.

Anyone experiencing new interference to Freeview or other aerial-based TV services can contact Restore TV for help.
