Families urged to claim Welsh Government school essentials grant

As the new academic year begins, families in Flintshire are being encouraged to apply for Welsh Government support with school costs.
The School Essentials Grant provides £125 per child per year, with £200 available for children entering Year 7.
The funding can be used towards items such as uniforms, sports kits, stationery and school activities.
All looked after children qualify for the grant.
The scheme is aimed at families on lower incomes who receive certain benefits.
Schools also receive additional funding when families claim the grant.
Since being introduced in 2018, £62.5m has been spent on the scheme.
In the past two years alone, more than 170,000 families have received support.
Applications can be made via Flintshire Council’s website:

In addition, the Welsh Government says: All primary school pupils in Wales now receive free school meals, introduced to tackle child poverty and promote healthy eating.
Post-16 learners may be eligible for the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), the most generous in the UK.
EMA is a weekly grant of £40 to support 16–18 year olds with education costs such as transport and meals.
Applications for EMA can be made through Student Finance Wales: https://www.studentfinancewales.co.uk/further-education-funding/education-maintenance-allowance/
Jack Sargeant MS said: “Welsh Labour recognise the financial pressures families face, particularly during the back-to-school period. That’s why the Welsh Government is focused on providing families with targeted, meaningful support. Every child deserves the best chance to succeed, and these measures help ensure no pupil is left behind.”
