Emergency work continues on burst ‘strategic trunk main’ in Broughton
A burst water main in Broughton is again causing supply problems for households across Flintshire after a temporary repair failed.
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water said the burst is on a major strategic trunk main near the Bretton treatment works, affecting customers in Flint, Holywell, Ffynnongroyw, Greenfield, Llanerch y Mor, Mostyn, Oakenholt, Talacre, Whitford, Queensferry, Shotton, Connah’s Quay, Garden City, Hawarden, Mancot and Sandycroft.

Engineers carried out an initial repair last weekend to allow the main to be refilled and service reservoirs replenished before attempting a permanent fix.
The aim was to avoid shutting the main during a heatwave.
The company said the pipe is located four metres underground and close to electricity cables, making the repair “incredibly difficult” and a “huge job”.
Welsh Water Chief Executive Peter Perry has apologised to residents impacted by the issue.
He said: “I apologise to our customers who are supplied from our Breton treatment works near Broughton in North East Wales, we’ve got a burst on a strategic trunk main that’s been incredibly difficult to repair.”
“First of all, in terms of the safety of our workforce. And secondly, in terms of very, very difficult ground conditions…”
“Unfortunately, the initial repair has now failed, and that means that supplies are now off to a large number of customers in North East Wales, and I am very, very sorry for that.”
“We’re doing all we can. We’re working round the clock to get the repair done, and we’re hopeful of getting that done later today.”

Water is also being delivered to customers on the priority service register.
Health Advice
Public Health Wales is urging residents affected by the burst water main to take steps to protect their health and wellbeing during the ongoing disruption and to look out for family, friends and neighbours.
People are advised to stay hydrated by drinking their usual amount of water, especially in the warm weather. Water can be collected from Dwr Cymru water stations in the area. It’s particularly important to make sure that young children and the elderly are also drinking enough water.
Hand hygiene remains important — wash hands with soap and water, or use alcohol hand gel, before preparing food, after using the toilet and after changing nappies.
For those feeding babies, bottled water supplied by Welsh Water is safe to use. Do not use supermarket bottled water for baby formula, as it may contain too much sodium.
The Dwr Cymru bottled water should be boiled and allowed to cool before making up feeds. Ready-made formula can also be used.
To help manage household needs, people can reuse water from cooking or washing-up to flush toilets and consider safe alternative sources such as garden water butts.
