Drug drive arrest and 30 offences in Flint road safety checks

A driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and dozens of motorists were reported for offences during a road safety operation in Flint on Thursday.
Officers from North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit carried out the checks as part of efforts to improve road safety.
The operation resulted in:
• One male arrested on suspicion of drug driving after testing positive for cannabis at the roadside
• A PG9 prohibition notice issued after a vehicle was found to have defects
• 20 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) issued to drivers for not wearing a seatbelt
• 12 TORs issued for using a mobile phone behind the wheel
• 97 roadside eyesight tests carried out, with two failures recorded
• Two TORs for defective tyres with cord exposed
• One TOR for an insecure load
• One driver stopped for having no licence
• One TOR issued after a child was found not in a car seat
• One knife seized
Other offences included misrepresented number plates, defective lights and vehicles with windows letting through insufficient light.
A TOR, or Traffic Offence Report, is issued by police when a driver commits certain road traffic offences. It can lead to a fixed penalty fine, penalty points, a driver education course, or in more serious cases, a court appearance.
Sergeant Duncan Logan of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and every single day we act against those responsible for illegal driving.
“Despite our repeated warnings it is disappointing that a minority of motorists continue to flout the law and endanger not only themselves but other road users by using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
“The penalty for this offence is six points on your licence and a £200 fine – if a new driver receives six penalty points within the first two years of passing their test, their licence will automatically be revoked.
“Wearing a seatbelt is also a crucial step in protecting yourself and others on the road and it is worrying that a 3-second task is being avoided by some drivers.
“With autumn just around the corner we are urging drivers to ensure that their vehicles are safe and pay particular attention to tyres and lights.
“We make no apologies in trying to reduce serious and fatal collisions in line with road safety initiatives such as this one held yesterday. Further operations will be carried out over the next few weeks as we are committed to making the roads of north Wales as safe as possible. If this operation prevented one person from being injured or worse, killed – then we see it as a success.”
