Wrexham Glyndwr University Remains Top in North Wales for Student Employability
Wrexham Glyndwr University strengthened its position as number one in North Wales for getting its students jobs with a rise in employability.
New data released this week by HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency), shows that a total of 93% of students who completed a full-time degree in 2015/16 were in work or further study six months after graduation – the best in region.
The Destination of Leavers Survey (DLHE) revealed the figure had risen by 0.9 percentage points from 92.1% the previous year.
Wrexham Glyndwr University is also number one in Wales and tenth in the UK for part-time students in employment, with 99.1% graduating and securing a job or participating in further study within six months.
Vice Chancellor Professor Maria Hinfelaar said she was “delighted” with the results and thanked the institution’s award-winning careers team for its hard work in securing the figure and supporting alumni.
“I am delighted with the excellent employability record of our graduates, which has again improved from the previous year,” said Professor Hinfelaar.
“This independent survey has shown that students who choose WGU will do well in their future careers, thanks to our applied focus and good links with employers.
“I am especially proud that this news reaches us on the back of our Silver Award under the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), which also takes into account how well students get on later in life.”
Wrexham Glyndwr is renowned for its student support; given its size and age the University – which celebrates its tenth anniversary next year – is more agile and can offer the personal touch, which also led to it being named number one in Wales and seventh in the UK in the Social Mobility Index.
This was followed by a Silver Award for quality of teaching in the TEF, which found the institution “encourages high levels of student engagement, technology-enhanced learning and industry relevance in the curriculum.”
Karen Lennox, Careers and Employability Manager, said: “I’m delighted that we are once again number one in North Wales for employability, which is testament to the work that goes on between careers and our operational and academic colleagues, putting the student at the heart of everything we do, now and in the future.”
She added: “Our courses are designed with local and regional employers, whose skills and knowledge are vital as we seek to have our students job-ready on graduation.
“We prepare them for life, not just their degree, and that’s reflected in these positive results.”
